Archbishop's Palace


weitere Archbishop's Palace is located at Katedralna Street. At the beginning of the 12th century, this was a two-storey late-Romanesque bishop’s residence with a rectangular base and two rooms separated by a vestibule. Upstairs there was a larger hall (‘sala episcopalis’) and a chapel, one element of which has been preserved to this day: a granite portal in the shape of a pointed arch characteristic of the 1250s and 1260s. Over the years, the palace was expanded and reconstructed. Archdiocesan Museum

weitere If you plan to visit Wroclaw by car, please remember about having you driving license and car’s registration documents with you. Foreign driving licenses are valid in Poland. Travelling on Polish roads is free, except just a few short ways. It is all because of lack of motorways, freeways and fast routes. Just 13 km west of the city centre you will be through passport control and baggage claim in minutes. In anticipation of the 2012 European Football Championships Wroclaw's main train station is presently undergoing major renovation works on the entire building, including the interior, exterior, tracks, platforms, facilities and even the area surrounding the train station. Works are not scheduled to be complete until 2012. Botanical Garden in Wroclaw

Cathedral of St John the Baptist


weitere St John the Baptist Cathedral is one of the most valuable monuments of Wroclaw’s church architecture. This was probably the first cathedral erected in the times of King Boleslaus the Brave, when a bishopric was established in Wroclaw in the year 1000. It was built of stone laid in lime mortar. The second cathedral, partly destroyed after the death of Mieszko II in 1034, was rebuilt under Bishop Jerome (1051–1062). Church of St Martin


weitere The small Gothic saint Martin church is the only remaining part of the oldest Piast's castle in Wroclaw (The Silesian Piasts were the oldest line of the Piast dynasty that gave Poland its first kings). Church of St Mary on Piasek


weitere Piasek Island (Wyspa Piasek), literally translated Sand Island, has been a religious centre since the 12th century and is dominated by the Church of St Mary on Piasek. Church of the Holy Cross


weitere Church of the Holy Cross was the first two-storey church built in Silesia and one of only a handful in Europe. Dom Handlowy Feniks


weitere Dom Handlowy Feniks (Phoenix Department Store) is located  between the eastern side of the market square and the Szewska Street. When it opened in 1904, Feniks was the largest department store in Wroclaw and the grandest. In 1929, the original art nouveau facade facing the market square was given a simpler, modernist look. The huge glazing above the main entrance was replaced with more conventional window rows. East Park

Gross Rosen


weitere Gross Rosen was a German concentration camp, located in Gross-Rosen in Lower Silesia - now Rogoznica. It was located directly on the rail line between Jawor and Strzegom. Gross Rosen was a German concentration camp set up in 1940 and became an independent camp on May 1, 1941. Its prisoners were destined for hard work in the local granite quarry which belonged to the SS DEST firm. History of Wroclaw

Japanese Garden

Ksiaz

Main Market Square


weitere Wroclaw's Main Market Square is the second-largest in Poland, after that in Krakow. It is a medieval market square, now the heart of a pedestrian zone. The square is rectangular with the dimensions 205 x 175m. In the centre stand the town hall and a group of buildings separated by alleys. Town Hall
